Sensors are vital to provide the intelligence gathering that Edge AI needs. I have been waiting for someone to come up with sensors as IP that can be easily embedded into SoCs rather than them having to be discrete components as they are at the moment which have to be made on custom production lines. Nanusens has done just that with its technology of building sensors within the layer of a CMOS chip. This means that chips designs with the IP sensors can be moved between foundries. 

Nanusens has a very interesting technology to create the sensors that uses the changes in capacitance between two parts of the MEMS sensor structure that they build. It’s a different structure for each type of sensor such as for pressure, movement, sound, etc. Uniquely this means that they can create a single chip with several different types of sensors within it. 

It has now used this capacitance technology to create digitally tunable capacitors (DTC) that can be used in the RF Front End of 5G and 6G mobile phones to unlock the higher bands that are needed for data transfer with a compact single chip solution with numerous integrated DTCs rather that the current bulky solution of many discrete capacitors. In addition, Nanusens claims that this new approach to antenna tuning is 30% more efficient giving longer talk times and has 14% better range. 

In the drive to sensors everywhere, Nanusens has a unique solution to gather all kinds of sensor information via IP structures and also to enable the data to be transmitted over 5G and 6G.

Space is always at a premium within hearables; similarly so is battery life. Adding more sensors to create “smart “ hearable products is therefore challenging. The answer may come from advances in MEMS manufacturing. European start-up, Nanusens, have developed methods to create MEMS sensors within standardized CMOS manufacturing processes. This enables sensors to be placed on the same silicon as the control logic, making them up to ten times smaller and freeing space for other components or larger batteries.
